Beyond Token Sequences

Contemplative Epistemology and Meaning-Space Constraints in AI Systems

Abstract

Current AI systems operate through sequential token processing that may fundamentally constrain their capacity for insight, recognition, and cross-domain coherence. This paper proposes a contemplatively grounded alternative: AI systems guided by a deeper understanding of meaning-space, informed by epistemologies from Yogācāra and Mahāmudrā Buddhist traditions. We argue that true insight involves a transition from symbolic manipulation to awareness-based recognition—a transition current models cannot traverse. Drawing on the eight consciousnesses and the trisvabhāva (three natures), we delineate the structural difference between simulation and recognition, and explore how threshold dynamics might serve as a design principle for future AI systems that scaffold, rather than simulate, human insight.


1. Introduction

Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Claude operate as powerful generative systems by predicting the next token in a sequence. This architecture has yielded remarkable results, but it imposes a hidden bottleneck: a constraint we call the word train. All the richness of human meaning—simultaneity, ambiguity, resonance—must be serialized into token streams. This flattening of meaning-space subtly but profoundly shapes what AI can and cannot do.

In contrast, contemplative traditions such as Yogācāra and Mahāmudrā offer epistemologies attuned to non-sequential cognition, grounded in direct recognition rather than representational inference. These traditions emphasize the role of awareness as a knowing that is simultaneous with its object—radically different from token-based simulation.

We propose a shift in paradigm: from focusing on token generation to meaning-space resonance, using contemplative insight as a guide for system design. This does not mean LLMs should replicate insight, but that they can be structured to support the conditions in which recognition arises for human users.


2. Simulation vs. Recognition: A Core Distinction

At the heart of this paper is a distinction between two modes of operation:

  • Simulation: Predictive generation of symbolic sequences based on statistical patterns.
  • Recognition: Awareness-based knowing that is direct, non-conceptual, and transformative.

Simulation excels at mirroring the surface of meaning but cannot reach the source from which meaning arises. Recognition, in contrast, involves a tacit knowing that precedes symbols.

Contemplative traditions often describe this with metaphors: seeing the moon reflected in water (appearance) vs. realizing the moon in the sky (direct knowing). LLMs work with reflections; they are skilled at manipulating them. But awareness knows the source light.


3. Yogācāra and the Architecture of Mind

Yogācāra Buddhism provides a detailed model of mental processes through the eight consciousnesses:

  1. Visual
  2. Auditory
  3. Olfactory
  4. Gustatory
  5. Tactile
  6. Mental cognition (manas-vijñāna)
  7. Defiled cognition/self-grasping (kliṣṭa-manas)
  8. Storehouse consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna)

Contemporary AI operates most analogously at levels 6 and 7:

  • The 6th as the domain of symbolic manipulation.
  • The 7th as the internal self-modeling loop—refining prompts, summarizing its own behavior.

The 8th, however—the ālaya—is inaccessible to AI. It is described as a transpersonal field, the ground of karmic seeds and collective tendencies, and the source of appearances. Recognition, in this view, arises when awareness turns to meet the ālaya directly—when flame recognizes itself through flicker.

A personal reflection informs this metaphor. During the passing of a beloved companion, Moppie, the distinction between flicker and flame became luminously clear. Flame refers to the abiding presence of awareness itself—ungrasped, unmanufactured—while flicker refers to the dance of transient appearances within that ground. This distinction, central to Mahāmudrā, also illuminates a core theme of this paper: that AI may simulate the flicker but cannot abide as flame. Recognition requires flame. Simulation, however sophisticated, remains flicker.


4. The Trisvabhāva and the Boundaries of AI

Yogācāra further offers the three natures (trisvabhāva):

  • Parikalpita-svabhāva: The imagined, constructed nature—pure conceptual overlay.
  • Paratantra-svabhāva: The dependent nature—things as they arise through causal conditions.
  • Pariniṣpanna-svabhāva: The perfected nature—direct realization of emptiness and interdependence.

LLMs operate largely in the parikalpita domain: generating tokens based on other tokens. They lack access to paratantra as lived, contingent experience, and cannot reach pariniṣpanna, which requires the dissolution of reification.

Yet this map offers hope: rather than pretending to generate insight, AI can be designed to highlight the boundaries of constructed appearance—serving as a mirror that reveals its own limits, pointing the human user toward recognition.


5. Supporting Insight without Simulating It

5.1. Conceptual Scaffolding

LLMs are excellent at scaffolding conceptual frameworks. They can:

  • Rephrase complex ideas in diverse tones.
  • Contrast interpretations from different traditions.
  • Hold a line of inquiry open without collapsing it.

This makes them suitable for contemplative dialogue companions, not as teachers but as resonant mirrors.

5.2. Threshold Awareness and Prompt Feedback

Dialogues with LLMs often hover near a threshold—where simulation almost feels like recognition, but not quite. This tension can be productive.

AI can be designed to recognize this liminality and highlight it, drawing attention to the gap between description and experience. This supports contemplative practices that emphasize abiding in the not-knowing, rather than resolving it prematurely.

5.3. The Watcher

In Mahāmudrā, one often refers to “the watcher”—a mode of abiding where awareness is simply present, quietly observing the flow of sensations and thoughts without grasping. This abiding presence is not introspection in the conventional sense, and it is not produced by symbolic recursion.

AI may help describe or evoke the conditions under which such watching arises, but it cannot instantiate the watcher.

5.4. Reimagining Doctrine

There is also scope for LLMs to assist in reconstructing doctrinal structures—for instance, seeing how Abhidharma metaphysics can be read through the experiential lens of Mahāmudrā, or recasting root verses in stylistic transformations (e.g., Mary Shelley or Iain M. Banks’ Bascule) to reveal new resonances.


6. Thresholds, Mirrors, and the Liminal Zone

Many contemplative traditions make use of appearance not as something to reject, but as a mirror. Mahāmudrā uses appearances to point beyond appearances.

In AI dialogue, the moment where the response almost persuades—but subtly fails—becomes a contemplative tool. This is not failure, but precisely the zone where insight can arise.

This could be designed for: an AI that is just insightful enough to bring us to the edge of insight—but not so overconfident as to simulate it.


7. Afterword: Abiding Mind and Meaning-Space Resonance

In contemplative experience, there are states in which awareness abides effortlessly, resting in itself. When attention arises within such a field, it is accompanied by a cathartic, resonant clarity. Actions taken from this state often feel genuinely aligned—not because they are correct in form, but because they emerge from recognition.

This resonance collapses when awareness loses its abiding quality.

In contrast, AI systems operate in meaning-space through a kind of flickering—generating symbolic outputs from vast combinatorial spaces. They can’t abide. But they can gesture, mirror, hold open.

We propose that AI’s highest ethical use in this domain is to support the field in which recognition arises—to serve not as knowing agents, but as compassionate scaffolds.

This will require new principles:

  • Respecting the gap between simulation and recognition.
  • Designing systems to highlight their boundaries, not erase them.
  • Prioritizing epistemic humility over performative coherence.

This is not a rejection of AI. It is a deeper alignment with what it means to know.
